Naturalization is the process in which a permanent resident can apply to become a U.S. citizen. The person must meet some basic requirements. He/she must be a permanent resident for at least 5 years, ½ of those years must be while they are residing in the U.S. The person must demonstrate that he/she can speak and write basic English. He/she must pass the civic test, which is a test of U.S. history and government. In addition, the permanent resident alien must demonstrate that he/she has good moral character (depending on their background, this could potentially be a problem). To protect your status, consult your attorney before submitting applications to the USISC, including renewing your green card or applying for naturalization.
