FAQ's

How come the "green card" is not "green" in color?

When the green card, which is actually USCIS form I-551, was first issued, it was a green document.  Later on, USCIS (formerly INS) changed the format and issued plastic cards which have tints of pink, instead of green color.  The plastic cards at the time were not electronically readable.  In recent years, the cards issued are electronically readable and contains information for the named permanent resident.  However, the name is stuck and the card is often referred to as a “green card” when it is in fact pink in color.  Even though the color of the green card has changed, the purpose has not.  The green card still represents to people part of a dream of being able to live and work in this country permanently.
